New Contract in Canada

BTA International GmbH (BTA) and its partner and licensee for North America, CCI BioEnergy Inc. (CCI), have been selected by SEMECS, a public-private partnership between Biogaz EG and a collection of 27 Area Municipalities, to design and supply the BTA® Process for the SEMECS Project. Located in the City of Varennes, the facility will be the first of its kind in Quebec, a Province with ambitious plans for the biological treatment of a broad range of organic materials generated in the residential and commercial sectors.

Using the BTA® Process as a total solution platform, the facility will be designed to convert 51.000 metric tonnes per year of residential Source Separated Organics (SSO), grass clippings, septage, and commercial organics. The BTA® Hydromechanical Pre-treatment System will pulp the inputs and extract the heavy, light, and grit fraction contaminants. The clean and homogenous suspension will be digested using the BTA® Anaerobic Digestion System. Facility and operational control will be built around the BTA® Process Control System.

The biogas will be used on-site to create heat and power for facility self sufficiency and to off-set the energy needs at the ethanol plant where the biomethanization facility will be co-located. Prior to digestion, a sanitization step will be implemented to create a system that further closes the loop by creating a high quality soil amendment to be applied on the farmlands that supply the ethanol plant with corn.

Together, BTA and CCI will first deliver a services package, beginning with the facility and process design phase and continuing through into the daily operations phase. Construction supervision and the planning and supervision of the commissioning and start-up are also integrated into the solution delivery. BTA will be responsible, under a separate agreement, to deliver the key equipment and software components of the BTA® Process into the project.

The added value that BTA and CCI deliver to the SEMECS Project is the Canadian experience accrued from the 13 years of daily operations in the City of Toronto, Ontario where the BTA® Process has converted more than 420,000 tonnes of SSO. The SEMECS Biomethanization Project is expected to have a broad impact and be a showcase for Quebec, for Canada, and across North America
